Lawtina Awards Program
Helping Latina lawyers offset the high-cost of the Bar Exam
Background and Purpose
Located at the epicenter of law and justice, Jarabe Gourmet Pops feels a strong sense of responsibility to give back to the legal community in Washington, D.C., and beyond.
Currently, Latinos make up about 18 percent of the U.S. population, but despite these numbers, Latinos comprise only 4 percent of U.S. lawyers. Conversely, Latinas make-up 7 percent of the Latino population in the U.S., but only represent 2 percent of the legal field. The lack of financial resources continues to be one of the many barriers for Latinas who wish to pursue a legal profession; and for those who do make it and graduate from law school they are faced with additional financial roadblocks with the high-cost of examinations and licensing fees. With all these barriers to entry into the legal field, Latinos will remain disproportionately underrepresented in the legal profession until an increase of financial resources is allocated to address this disparity. As long as Latinos are underrepresented in the legal profession, the Latino community will remain undeserved.
To draw attention to these community challenges, Jarabe Gourmet Pops has established the Lawtina Awards Program which aims to support aspiring Latina lawyers in their career endeavors and helping them offset the high-cost of licensing, known as the Bar examination.
The goal of the scholarship is to support the next generation of Latina lawyers by providing a one-time Bar Exam stipend to Latinas pursuing a legal career. Scholarships will be awarded to a deserving Latina law student regardless of their full-time or part-time status, who will take the Bar Exam that year.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Must be a full-time or part-time law student who will take the Bar Exam in their respective state during the summer of the application deadline.
Although there is no cumulative GPA minimum requirement, academic achievement and excellence will be strongly considered.
Must have significant campus and community involvement and/or leadership.
Must have made significant contributions to the Latina/x community.
Must be of Latino/a descent.
